Bee School Meadowlane PS

Meadowlane is a Bee School!

Kitchener is a Bee City and we would like to expand the work already done by bringing the message home at the grass-roots level. It is important for our Green Team to be involved in an initiative where they can see the tangible results of their work. Our students also need to be made aware of the plight of our bees and how we can help them. In the end, we are striving to make our students the stewards of our world.

Bee School Application

As a school we have just recently been made aware of the importance of bees and the issues that are threatening them. There is a pollinator patch being created near our property which has inspired us to follow suit. Our Green Team is energetic, enthusiastic, and dedicated to environmental action. We have a series of monthly initiatives planned for the school year: all based on the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle). Becoming a Bee School and educating our students, staff, and community on the importance of bees and other pollinators to our environment and our ecosystem is one more initiative that we would be proud to have.

We will be creating our own pollinator patch in our kindergarten play area. There are three metal troughs that contain soil in which we will plant several varieties of native plants. We are choosing plants that bloom at different times of the year to keep the patch colourful as well as productive for our pollinators. In addition, we will be constructing bee homes to add to the patch. The plants we will be planting include: wild strawberry, mountain mint, prairie smoke, crocuses, butterfly milkweed, black-eyed Susan, sky blue Aster, and purple prairie clover.

Our Green Team will do presentations in each of our 12 classrooms to inform students and staff about the importance of bees and what we can do to help their situation. In addition, we will publish information on our school’s website and through our email lists to families. Furthermore, our Team is contemplating a presentation to our School Council.
