Our school is environmentally conscious. We are home to a nature-based program (NEST) Nature Education for Sustainable Todays and Tomorrows – as well as DEN (Davis Bay Environmentalists and Naturalists) classes. We have a 1500 sq. foot greenhouse; we grow food for our students, families and community! We also have lots of gardens and a keen interest in environmental and sustainable practices. The ‘natural’ world is important to us! Bees are important to us!
Our school has a native pollinator flower garden which we plan to expand. It backs onto a nearby slope and is dual purpose, to support pollinators and maintain the slope to avoid erosion. The plants in the garden currently includes: calendula, cardoon, chives, borage, marigolds, sunflowers, bergamot and echinacea. Our intention is also to use this garden as an educational space for our school and community to learn about pollinator plants and medicinal uses of local plants.
