Bee School Annette Street PS

Annette Street designated a Bee School

As a kindergarten team of approximately 90-100 students in the middle of Toronto, we seek to find ways of connecting to our local environment and recognizing the importance of our urban wildlife. We are naturally curious with the world around us and want to build a positive relationship with our community from a young age. Becoming a Bee School would give us a sense of responsibility and goals to adhere to when creating and maintaining our pollinator garden.

Through joining the Bee City Schools, we will be able to participate in a larger community of like-minded students and it will provide us with an opportunity to take pride in our achievements. We wish for our pollinator garden to be the beginning of future years as we work to bring more nature to our urban school through more gardens and other wildlife initiatives such as bat houses and bird feeders. Being a Bee City School will encourage us to maintain and grow our garden for future years.

2024 Renewal

Last year was our first year as a Bee City School. Our kindergarten team thoroughly researched bees and their importance with our community. We worked with a non-profit organization called Pollinate Crate where we created a pollinator garden with crates. We also made a variety of bee houses to spread throughout our community.

This year we will replant our crate garden. As well, we plan to begin to extend our garden to another area of the school – with help from our Bee City garden kit! To extend and deepen our understanding of pollinators and supporting our local environment, we are researching birds which will include pollinating birds. Our existing and new garden will include native plants to support our pollinators.
