Bee School Alf Cuthbert

Our first Bee School in Manitoba!

The Alf Cuthbert School is found in the Interlake region of Manitoba. This agriculture land is surrounded by many lakes and natural wildlife areas. We have diverse families of bees including, Alfalfa Leaf Cutter bees, Mason bees and honey bees. There has been a decrease in the population of native bees in our area.

Becoming a Bee School, will help to focus the students in their learning around supporting pollinators which in turn supports a sustainable edible environment. Students will be able to further understand the importance they play in supporting the pollinators and being more conscious of their actions in our natural environment.

2024 Renewal

In the past, I worked with the grade 3/4 class to create, plant and care for pollinator gardens. This year, I am working with 30 students in grades 5-8, to plant and grow a variety of plants for the school, seniors, Municipality and community of Moosehorn. We have purchased a greenhouse and will begin to plan as soon as the weather is favorable. We have received a bee kit from Bee School and will be using this as part of our learning.
