Bee City Toronto

The First Bee City in Canada!

In 2016, Toronto City Council showed its commitment to raising awareness of the importance of pollinators by adopting a resolution designating Toronto a Bee City. With that decision, Toronto became the first Bee City in Canada. Since then, Toronto has gone on to declare an official bee and to create its Pollinator Protection Strategy that identifies guiding principles, priorities and actions that the City can take to protect Toronto’s diverse native pollinator community. To further its commitment to pollinator wellbeing, Toronto launched the PollinateTO Grants Program, which provides funding, training and technical support for community-led pollinator habitat creation projects that educate and engage communities and increase pollinator habitat in Toronto.

2024 Renewal

In 2023, the City of Toronto funded the creation of 112 pollinator gardens through 44 community groups as part of the PollinateTO Grants program. Educational materials and campaigns were developed and disseminated year-round to share the importance of native plants, wild pollinators in Toronto, leaving the leaves, going beyond no mow may, and more.

The City’s Live Green Toronto team was present at 35+ community and city-wide events for outreach on programming including pollinator stewardship and best practices for biodiverse landscaping. Throughout the past year, PollinateTO hosted plant giveaways, tree and shrub giveaways, and a native plant kit contest. The program celebrated Pollinator Week by encouraging grantees to organize and host community events, and additionally by hosting pop-up native plant kit giveaways in several locations across the city. We plan to increase the amount of kits distributed to individual residents in 2024!
