Ontario Tech University

Ontario Tech University is located on the lands of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and the campus is surrounded by hectares of lush greenery and ravine systems. Not only does the natural space provide mental and physical health benefits to the community, but it also provides essential food and shelter to a variety of different pollinators. The school takes great measures to care for the land and plan infrastructure in a way that supports pollinator populations and educates the community on the importance of pollinators.

Over the course of 2022, Ontario Tech has planted 150 trees and continued to expand the existing pollinator gardens. The apiary was also upgraded to insulated bee boxes to help our honey bees continue to pollinate and produce honey. Similarly, Ontario Tech has continued to maintain the green roofs, bioswales, bat boxes and orchards – all of which support a variety of pollinator species.
Beyond the physical maintenance of pollinator spaces, the Pollinator Team has involved students, staff, and the community in tours of the apiary, planting opportunities, and in-school workshops.
