Mohawk College
Leader in Sustainability Joins Bee City Family
Located on the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, Mohawk College is widely recognized as a leader in sustainability. As part of its sustainability mission, the school supports education, engagement and promoting pollinator health on campus through various initiatives. The campus is home to six honey bee colonies, three pollinator gardens and bioswales, a 49-plot community garden and an Indigenous three sisters garden. The college has also developed a Sustainable Landscape Plan, prioritizing the naturalization of campus grounds.
During the past year we have maintained our three pollinator gardens, bioswales and Community Garden, as well as our Indigenous Medicine Garden.
Since the pandemic, this was our first year opening up our Community Garden at the Fennell Campus to the community again. We saw our students, staff and community members back in the garden growing fresh, local produce. In addition to the produce that was harvested by the gardeners, the Community Garden produced 441 pounds of fresh food that was donated to a local food bank. A variety of fruits and vegetables including beets, cabbage, kale, peppers, onions, radishes, strawberries, squash, tomatoes and zucchini were grown in the 2022 season.
Our two honey bee colonies were cared for by our new partnership with local beekeeper, Backed by Bees https://backedbybees.com/. They ensure that the bees can continue to benefit from their home on our campus and also provide us with honey from the bees, which we sold at our Farm Stand.
Our grounds maintenance continues to be guided by Mohawk’s Sustainable Landscape Plan which prioritizes the naturalization of our grounds. Over the past year we have had the opportunity to host community-based educational programming both virtually and in person. We continue to emphasize the importance of pollinators and bees in our community.
